"In the Driver's Seat"
Medina Valley High School
Castroville, Texas
Being “In the Driver’s Seat” demands a lot of responsibility. Medina Valley (MV) Student Council emphasized the need to be a responsible driver by not using your cell phone while driving, making sure everyone was buckled up, and not driving under the influence of alcohol. The Crew conducted several seat-belt checks, hung posters, read announcements at school, designed t-shirts, and performed lunchtime skits.
One of the major projects was Drivers Obeying Traffic Safety (D.O.T.S.), which introduced Teena Driver to schools across Texas and the nation. MV sent a kit, which included Teena, a packet with Teen Driving Safety Projects, and a CD with information explaining the project. They also created a Web site.
The Crew also posted a large sign, along with 50 gravestones, along the main highway that runs through Castroville. The sign read: “Every year, 7,500 teens die in automobile crashes. DRIVE RESPONSIBLY.”
